The other day I made a purchase online that I'd been debating for a loooooong time. One I even made a long time ago but it didn't pan out for me. I purchased a dumbphone.

A hand holding a white box with a picture of Nokia 2780 Flip phone on it.

As you can see from the photo above, the phone I picked was a Nokia 2780 Flip (Amazon Affiliate Link). It was under $100 and had the best reviews from people who had previously made the switch, I figured I'd give it a try and see how it goes. As I mentioned earlier, I tried this before with the Nokia 6300 4G which I loved, but there was one massive flaw that Nokia could have fixed but chose not to (the keypad delay was misconfigured in the software so single taps registered as double taps most of the time). So here I am again trusting Nokia with another KaiOS device. I am still waiting for my SIM card to arrive so I won't be able to provide an adequate review of the phone, but so far it's been pretty nice to use and feels good in the hand. Here are my first impressions of the phone.

Pros

  • Supports WiFi calling/data.
  • Buttons and construction feels decent.
  • SD card for expansion.
  • Long battery life.
  • "Emergency button" can be disabled.
  • USB-C port.
  • Headphone jack is okay if Bluetooth is not an option.
  • Has a flashlight app for the camera flash.

Cons

  • The viewing angles on the screen are really bad.
  • Sometimes the keypad switches from T9 to predictive text typing.
  • Typing in long e-mails and passwords can be a pain (was hoping to use Bluetooth keyboards, but no dice).
  • When plugged into PC via USB it sees it as a USB drive but unable to open it to transfer files.
  • The camera is what you'd expect, and doesn't even compare to Nokia's old budget Android phones.

I hope to have a much more thorough review once I have a SIM card and take it out of the house to put it to the test. I still plan to keep my iPhone 13 Mini with me because I need it for work and the camera is amazing, but I plan to use it a lot less frequently with the Nokia in hand.

Go out and do good things! 👍
